How I Learned to Love My Curves

I grew up in the 50s. We had a farm where my father raised almost everything we ate from the garden to livestock. My mother was probably a size 16 and my father had a football player build. I was a perfect mix of the two. (Seriously, how cute is that ballerina?)

Early on I knew I would have to teach people to see me and not my weight. While I was without a doubt loved, I wasn’t taught to accept my body at any size. The first time I was enrolled in a weight loss program I was fourteen. Exercise and food plans felt like punishment. All the focus was on getting thin never on getting healthy.

I definitely got the message that if I weighed too much no one would love me. The goal wasn’t to make me feel bad about myself, it was to protect me from a society that might reject me. But that protection left me believing that the size of my pants had something to do with my value in the world.

In surrounding myself with mentors I could trust and learn from, I discovered that self-love and health are possible at any size.

As a young adult
I would crash diet, lose weight, then gain it back again. A cycle that may sound familiar. In therapy, I was able to identify the faulty thinking around my body image and let go of this idea that something was wrong with me based on my physique.

At the advice of my therapist I joined a gym. This was scary at first, and I asked a friend to come with me to sign up. Over time my mindset about exercise changed. Going to the gym became my mood booster rather than a punishment. Now, after 15 years of working with a trainer, I can truly say health is possible at any size.

My journey of self-discovery led me back to school where I got my masters degree in social work as well as a master coach certification. All the skills I learned through therapy and coaching, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and understanding how behaviors affect outcomes are the things I now use to help my clients love their curves.

I’m passionate about helping women over 50 feel empowered in their bodies. Are you ready for a Healthy Curves moment? What’s that, you may wonder? A Healthy Curves moment is catching sight of yourself naked in the mirror and thinking, “I love you” without missing a beat. It’s declaring, "I’m healthy, and I'm gorgeous no matter my size."

I realize for my generation this idea and the language of body positivity is pretty unfamiliar. But the other thing I know is the joy and freedom that comes with a new self-acceptance mindset. That’s why it’s my mission to help get you there.

There's so much life left to live and you deserve to live it!
